Clay Delay Big Orange Invitational 2011

When the thermometer climbs up to the100's, it must be time for the Big Orange!

This year's Big Orange Invitational(sponsored by Clay Delay and Brazos Forest Products) held true toform with temperatures reaching 102 degrees. Shooters gathered tofind a different kind of 100 at the Ellis County Sportsmen's Club inscenic Waxahachie Texas during the last weekend of July.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of anall-volunteer staff, shade and home ice cream were on hand to helpshooters beat the heat. And some targets were thrown as well.

For doubles on Friday, the wind wasn'tmuch of a factor (and it would remain light throughout the shoot).Stewart McCoin of Oklahoma showed good mid-season form with a 97 towin the Doubles event. John Castillo grabbed runner up with a 96 andTeresa Botha won a hotly contested shoot off for third place honorswith a score of 95. Carter Wehrheim took AAA with a 95. Other classwinners were David Weintraub (AA), Mike Schmitt (A), Jack Trybus (B),Tom Deaton (C), and Todd Ward (D).

After some re-hydrating, it was timefor the big guns to come out Saturday morning for the 12 gauge event.Two 100 straights were recorded by Stewart McCoin and Jay McGregor,with Stewart winning the shoot off for 12 gauge champion and Jaytaking second. The who's who line of competitors shooting off forthird place with 98s extended to the steps of the clubhouse, and TamiMyers came out on top of the field for third place. Class winnersincluded Carter Wehrheim (AAA), Richard Funk (AA), Gary Edwards (A),Jim Speer (B), Mike Guthrie (C), Nathan Brooks (D) and Todd Ward (E).

After a lovely lunch and more icecream, it was time to brave the heat again to find the 20 gaugechampion. Carter Wehrheim had the sole 100 of the afternoon to takegun champ, followed by another big shoot off to see which 99 wouldtake runner up. Lindsay Plesko edged out Mike Schmitt for second andthird place, respectively. Class winners were Stewart McCoin (AAA),Hank Schmidt (AA), Jay McGregor (A), Robert Nicholas (B), Mike Fadal(C) and Colt Fadal (D).

On Sunday, the mercury climbed and thesmall gauge scores dipped. No 100s were recorded in the 28 gaugeevent, but after a very rousing and entertaining shoot off of theshooters with 99's, Jeff Zwiebel was the last man standing for 28gauge gun champ, beating Stewart McCoin (runner up) and CarterWehrheim (third) as well as a host of other top notch shooters. Therest of the event shook out as follows: Chris Simmons (AAA), JayMcGregor (AA), Kevin Arterburn (A), Jim Pierce (B), Thomas Wainscott(C) and Don Henslee (D).

If we are being honest, the 410 eventwas a grind. It was the last hot event of a hot weekend. At least, itwas a grind for everyone except Chris Simmons, who shot the only 100for 410 gun champ. Bill Myers took runner up alone with a 99. CarterWehrheim, Stewart McCoin and Myron Gee shot off 98s for third.Wehrheim won the third place shoot off and McCoin took AAA with Geetaking AA. The rest of the class winners were Richard Funk (A),Rodney Beamsley (B), Nathan Brooks (C) and Mike Fadal (D).

Surprisingly, no shoot offs werenecessary to determine overall HOA. Stewart McCoin won HOA with ascore of 396, followed by Carter Wehrheim with a score of 395 andChris Simmons with a 394. Class winners were John Castillo (AAA),Bill Myers (AA), Jay McGregor (A), Robert Nicholas (B), Edward Hay(C) and Colt Fadal (D).

The club and sponsors would like tothank all of the shooters that came from near and far to make this agreat shoot, as well as the club and 4H volunteers that made this asafe and fun place to spend the weekend.

The club championship was shot on October 16. The format was 50 Skeet targets, 50 Skeet Doubles, 50 Trap 16 yard, 50 Trap Handicap. Targets were half price, and $725 was added to the prize pool by the club.

The summer doubles league wrapper up on September 14th. The league was well run and executed by Steve Calhoun, and was our first skeet league to use the handicap bird race instead of teams shooting head to head for points. This will allow future leagues to have more than eight teams without going past ten weeks of shooting (like the last spring league).

2010 Big Orange Invitational

The 2010 Big Orange Invitational met with great success last July, as a full compliment of shooters competed in the heat.

Many thanks go out to our 4H and club volunteers who worked hard to make this shoot a success.

There was a lightning induced delay to the Doubles event, which was resumed Saturday after the 12 and 20 gauge events were shot. Brandon Cade, Cameron Hill and Carter Wehrheim topped the field with scores of 99, with Carter winning the shoot-off.

The 12 gauge event saw lower than usual scores, and two scores of 100 shot by John McDonald and Bill Myers, with John taking the gun champion honors in the shoot-off.

Despite the heat kicking up a notch in the afternoon, 7 shooters shot 100 straight in the 20 gauge event: Brandon Cade, John Castillo, Barry Haley, Tami Myers, Hank Schmidt, Shawn Scott and Carter Wehrheim. Carter prevailed in the shoot off to win the 20 gauge event.

Sunday dawned hot, bright and calm, perfect conditions for eating ice cream in the shade. In the 28 gauge event, perfect 100s were shot by Brandon Cade, John Castillo, Stewart McCoin, Bill Myers and Carter Wehrheim. Stewart won the hotly contested shoot off for the 28 gauge title.

As the heat grew and the hydration levels shrank, Stewart McCoin and Shawn Scott stayed focused enough to shoot 100s in the 410 event, with Stewart edging Shawn out for the 410 title.

With a score of 398, Stewart McCoin of Oklahoma is the 2010 Big Orange HOA Champion. John Castillo, Carter Wehrheim and Shawn Scott shot 397s, with Carter taking runner-up and John third place.

The Ladies Champion is Tami Myers with a score of 391.

STC had a blast

As you probably know, Doubles Mania was postponed on March 20th due to weather issues. What you may not know is that the regional Sportsman's Team Challenge Shoot that was scheduled for the 21st took that opportunity to move their shoot to the 20th. This allowed them to shoot their rifle and pistol events on the (relatively) better Sunday and use our pavilion for their shotgun event on Saturday. Despite the horrendous shooting conditions, they had 11 teams show up and turn a rain out day into a very good day for the club. They were also good guests and left the club in the same shape they found it in. I went out and checked on them in the afternoon, and even though I don't consider myself a fair weather shooter, you could not have paid me to shoot in those conditions.

So a big thanks to those guys and I for one hope this is the start of a long relationship.

Skeet Field Closures at ECSC

In an effort to keep all of our shooters safe, the B.O.D. has voted to close skeet fields 1 and 2 during normal operations. These fields will be locked and will only be accessible for leagues and registered skeet shoots. In the event multiple trap fields are opened, we ask that skeet shooters move to fields 4, 5 and 6. If there is a Range Master on duty, he or she will ask your squad to move. Your cooperation and courtesy will be appreciated.

Obviously, if someone is working on a trap house, skeet shooters should not shoot targets from station 1. Simply move to station 2 and return to station 1 at the end of your round. This practice should be adhered to regardless of what field you are on.

Your Board of Directors feel this is the best way to make sure none of our shooters are in jeopardy. We thank you for working with us to keep ECSC a safe and enjoyable place to shoot.

ECSC Club Trap Shoot

Despite the wind, we had a good time shooting a little trap on Sunday, March 28th. The first round had 13 shooters. Harold Steen shot a 25 from the 16 yard line and a 20 from the 27 to win the first round with a 45. Craig Stevens won second with a 44.

Craig won the second round of 8 shooters with a 42, and second was a three way tie between Don Henslee, Jimmy Powell and Richard Chandler with 41 a piece.

January 2010 Club Trap Shoot

15 shooters braved the cool wind for the ECSC January Club Trap shoot on Sunday, Jan 24th. The format was Jump Back Jack (one round of singles is shot, 2 is added to the score to determine the handicap distance for a total of 50 birds). The first round winner was Marvin Tune with a 43, narrowly edging out Richard Chandler and Jim Green with scores of 41.

The second round was a tie between Richard Chandler and Marvin Tune at 40. Kevin Arterburn and Scott Cotton tied for 3rd with 39s.

Thanks to everyone who showed up for a fun day of shooting. Please note that future shoots will pay 2nd and/or 3rd place, depending on the size of the field. The next club trap shoot is scheduled for February 28th.

ECSC Club Challenge 2009

Ellis County Sportsman’s Club held it’s annual meeting and club championship on Saturday, October 24 2009. This gathering had a little something for everyone. We had delicious Frito pie, diet brownies, Halloween candy and talking skulls.

We started the meeting with elections and a vote on the revised Club Bylaws and Rules. All board members at the end of their term were re-elected. We would also like to welcome Randall Brooks to the BOD. Randall will be taking Terry Banks spot. We also need to say thanks and smooth sailing to Mr. Terry Banks for a job well done. Revisions to the bylaws and rules were approved and go into effect on January 1 2010.

Rusty Porter brought us up to date on the club’s finances. To summarize, we are doing well thanks to a lot of people busting their buns.

A drawing was held from folks who served as Range Master from 1 July 2009 thru 31 December 2009. Darren Bowden was the lucky winner of a free 2010 membership renewal. Being a Range Master does have its perks! See Bob Ramsden to sign up as a Range Master in 2010.

We also discussed the progress that has been made on the trap equipment. Don Henslee is our trap chairman and he has had a ton of help in updating our trap fields. Club trap shoots will continue to be held monthly. Drop Don Henslee or Don Williams Jr. a note for full details.

Doug Thomas will once again be in charge of our monthly club skeet shoot. Everyone pretty much agreed that the current system works, so no real changes are expected in this program. Check the website or holler at Doug for dates.

Before we adjourned, we formed a committee to oversee maintenance at the club. We will have more on this in future newsletters.

With the meeting concluded, everybody headed to the chow line. Karen Wells and Jean Beard had a great lunch prepared. Thanks ladies for all you do to make our club a success!
Next was the club championship. We decided to use the Lewis Class System to give everyone an equal chance to win some money. A special thanks to Doug Thomas and others who helped determine the winners.

Mr. Lelan Coltharp drove in from Terrell to claim the $125.00 and 2009 Club Champion honors. Good shooting, Lelan! Skeet Champions were Wayne Johnston, Darren Bowden and Scott Cotton. Skeet Champions won $50.00 each. Our Trap Champions also won $50.00. They were Marvin Tune, Jay Gage and Josh Wells. Skeet 12 gauge winners were Jack Martin, Bryan Mullins and Paul Camp. Skeet sub-gauge winners were Steve Calhoun, James Mouser and Bob Ramsden. Trap winners from 16 yards were Doug Thomas, Rusty Porter and Bob Butcher. Handicap trap winners were Don Henslee, Kevin Arterburn and Larry Turner.

I think everyone who attended will agree that this was a fun event. LOTS of folks won some money and it only cost them $20.00 to shoot 200 targets. Hope to see you at the club soon.
